Rohit Sharma Set To Lead India In Afghanistan T20Is; Ready To Captain In T20 World Cup

TWM Lives News: In a major decision regarding his T20I future, Rohit Sharma is “ready” to lead the side in the T20 World Cup 2024. He will make his T20I comeback in this month’s 3-T20I series at home against Afghanistan.

Rohit Sharma has not played T20Is for India since the semi-final exit in T20 World Cup 2022. Virat Kohli, too, hasn’t featured in the shortest format for India since then.

While Rohit is reportedly set to captain India in the T20I series against Afghanistan, there is no update yet on Kohli, who is very likely to be rested from this series.

BCCI official says Rohit Sharma is “ready to lead” in T20 World Cup 2024

The 3 T20Is against Afghanistan are scheduled to be played on January 11, 14, and 17. This short series is sandwiched between the Test series vs South Africa and England.

“We had a lengthy discussion with Rohit and he is ready to lead in T20 World Cup,” a BCCI official was quoted as saying.

While initially it was believed that Rohit, too, would be rested, now according to the latest developments known, Rohit will lead India against Afghanistan because both Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav are injured and unlikely to take part in the T20I series against Afghanistan. Jasprit Bumrah is set to be rested while KL Rahul is dropped from the T20I side.

This also is a big hint that the BCCI and selectors want Rohit to captain India in the T20 World Cup 2024 as well, even though Hardik Pandya has replaced him as the Mumbai Indians skipper. A BCCI official had earlier stated that the captaincy change in Mumbai Indians has not affected the BCCI and selectors’ mindset regarding having Rohit lead them in the T20 World Cup.

The BCCI official had added that the board and the selection panel, led by chief selector Ajit Agarkar, were impressed with Rohit Sharma’s captaincy during the World Cup, where India won 10 games in a row before losing the final to Australia.

Rohit is currently in South Africa where India have lost the first Test in Centurion, but will look to square the series in Cape Town.
